Once you understand the basic concept of meditation, you realize that there is no excuse to not practice meditation.

Even the following every day tasks can be thought of as meditation:

  • Retrieving the mail. Enjoy your blissful walk to the mailbox and take a moment of mindfulness to yourself.

  • Preparing food. Be mindful of how the food will nourish your body, mind, and spirit. This can also help you be more aware of what you are putting in your body.

  • Laying in bed. Take a few moments when laying down for bed to relax and focus on your breathing. If you’re like me, when you lay down your mind consists of just thoughts about the next day’s responsibilities. Try to avoid this as much as possible by taking a moment to be mindful.

  • Anything else! When you consider the health benefits of meditation, you will want to turn more and more of everyday events into meditation practices.

If you practice meditation, you probably feel that it calms your mind significantly.

This in turn directly results in improved focus, and thus a better attention span.

Try Out A Mindful Workout

There are several mindful exercises you can try out. And no, these aren’t workouts that you do in the gym.

A favorite of mine is called body scanning. This involves getting your body in a comfortable position, relaxing, then “scanning” your body from your toes up to the top of your head. As you work your way up, make yourself aware of any sensations you are feeling.

Body scanning is a great way to fall asleep at night, too. I do it every time I can’t fall asleep.

I rarely make it all the way up to my head, or past my waist for that matter, before I crash.

Find a meditation practice you’re comfortable with, ensure your surroundings are comfortable, and devote 15 or 20 minutes to your practice.

Transcendental meditation involves silently repeating a mantra while meditating. This is where the stereotypical “Om” repetition happens on tv shows and in movies. The mantra doesn’t have to be “Om”, though. It can also be any short phrase you want to focus on.

Yoga is a common form of meditation that incorporates the physical, mental, and spiritual realms. You will stretch your body into different positions while practicing breathing. It’s known to release endorphins and is a great way to relieve stress. It’s a fan favorite form of meditation.

What is the goal of meditation when it involves chakras? Chakra meditation specifically targets each of the seven chakras.

This can help open up blocked chakras, improving the aspects of the body that correspond with the chakras. Chakra meditation was traditionally practiced in Hinduism and Buddhism. It has, however, made its way to the western world as well.

For instance if you want to target the heart chakra, here’s an example of a breathing exercise that I use:

  1. Ensure you are in a comfortable position, seated in a room with little distractions.

  2. Close your eyes and picture yourself looking at your body in the 3rd person.

  3. Take a slow deep breath in, and sense the oxygen flowing to your heart.

  4. Visualize and sense the energy emanating into and around your chest.

  5. Take a deep breath out, and feel the energy flowing back through the heart chakra.

  6. Consider muttering a mantra as you practice.

Make the meditation practice unique to what works for you, but be sure to visualize the energy in your heart.

Yoga is somewhat unique since it involves more of the body than some other meditation practices. You will put your body in positions that can be uncomfortable, but they are necessary to release negative energy from the body.

For this reason, the goal of yoga is to improve overall wellness. This involves emphasis on the trifecta of mind, body, and spirit.
