meditation, spiritual, yoga

At its core, Tantra meditation is a meditation practice with the goal of expanding consciousness. Over the years, especially in the western hemisphere, Tantric traditions have been practiced with more of a focus on physical connection (we’re talking about sex, people).

Six Benefits of Tantra Meditation

Some of the benefits enjoyed by those who practice Tantra meditation include:

  • Greater sense of mindfulness. Regular practice of Tantra meditation can help you get to know yourself better. Emphasizing mindfulness is a common theme of nearly all meditation practices. It is a vital part of self care.

  • Balances energy to increase vitality. A tantric focus on the life energies (Kundalini/Prana) can lead to a sense of rejuvenation, thus increasing vitality.

  • Stress reduction. Like many other meditative practices, Tantra meditation is effective in reducing stress. This can result in so many other great life benefits such as lower blood pressure, relief from anxiety, and better sleep.

  • Spiritual growth and enlightenment. The Tantric path is a deeply spiritual one, and facilitates a connection with you and the universe. Practicing Tantra meditation will increase your spiritual awareness and can also be the source of your spiritual awakening.

  • Enhanced emotional healing. Tantric practice can uncover and help to resolve any deep-rooted emotions you may have. This will help with your overall emotional well-being.

  • Improved intimate relationships. Tantric sex practice will help foster a deep connection between you and your partner, emotionally and energetically.

Connecting with Energy and Consciousness

Tantra meditation involves a strong focus on energy. Because of this, it is important that we recognize our breath as the the Prana, or life force, and visualize/feel it every time we inhale or exhale.

We must also visualize and connect with our chakras, starting from the root chakra and moving up. For Tantra meditation to be most effective, it’s highly important that our chakras are clear. I know for me, I feel my chakras are most clear when I am holding my favorite crystals. Do what works for you!

Here we’ll outline four of the most common and important techniques used for Tantra meditation. There are several other tantric techniques that are effective, but these are our four that you can practice effectively right now.

Visualization

Tantra practitioners commonly utilize visualization to deepen their spiritual state. Some common things to visualize are Tantric deities, spiritual guides, and the flow of energy within and outside of the body. This visualizations can aid in higher states of consciousness and enhance focus on the meditation.

Pranayama (Breathwork)

Controlling your breathing is a major focus in nearly any form of meditation. This is no different in Tantra meditation. Rhythmic breathing and other similar breathing techniques will work great to regulate the flow of prana through the body.

If you aren’t familiar with any breathing techniques, just focus on taking deep breaths. Deep breathing can improve mindfulness during your session and ensure that you’re fully present in the moment.

Chakra Meditation

This involves focusing on the body’s seven chakras (energy centers). By meditating on our chakras, we can align and enhance our body’s energy improving our spiritual insight.

6 Tips for Having Tantric Sex With a Partner

Set Up your Sacred Space

Set up your environment so that it feels special and sacred. This could include dimming the lights or putting on music or a soundscape. Anything to create a comfortable and inviting vibe.

Communicate Openly with your Partner

Before you practice tantric sex, it’s important to be open with your partner and set your intentions right away. Open and honest communication is the key to a positive tantric experience for both of you. The conversation should be open and respectful, ensuring that both partners’ needs are heard.

It’s normal to be nervous trying something new in the bedroom. Communicating openly can also mitigate performance anxiety for you and your partner.

Start out with Some Meditation

Begin with a meditation session to promote mindfulness and staying present. Something I normally recommend is the following 3 step meditation routine.

  1. Sit directly across from your partner

  2. Maintain eye contact with them

  3. Synchronize your breathing

This simple 3 step routine will ensure both you and your partner are in the present moment.

Begin by Focusing on Sensual Touch

Don’t jump straight into sexual intercourse. Make sure to start with gentle, sensual touch. Explore your partner’s body with a sense of curiosity. You shouldn’t be rushing to climax, instead you should be focused on the movement and physical body of yourself and your partner.

Eye gazing and a focus on your breath are encouraged during this step.

Synchronize your Breath with your Partner

Synchronizing your breath with your partner can harmonize your energies, ultimately resulting in deeper love. You can try inhaling while your partner exhales, or vice versa. Awareness of both your breath and your partner’s breath can ensure that there is a constant flow of positive energy.

Synchronizing breathing will also create a strong sense of unity and togetherness.

Remember to Stay in the Present Moment

The most important part of this sensual practice is to remember, as with all mindfulness practices, you must stay grounded in the present moment and mindful.

Achieving orgasm is not the goal of tantric sex. The goal is to enjoy the journey along the way.

Orgasm isn’t the goal of tantric sex

Tantric sex should not be as much about sexual pleasure as it is about the spiritual and emotional journey between you and your partner. This practice requires an open mind, and a willingness to explore your partner’s physical body and spiritual body. Therefore, orgasm should not be the primary objective.

Orgasm control

To put an emphasis on the journey rather than the destination, many of those who practice tantric sex work on delaying their orgasm. It is believed that waiting as long as possible to climax will cause a deeper connection between you and your partner.

Experiment with Solo Tantric Sex

Solo man looking for spiritual awakening.

While less discussed than partner tantric sex, solo tantric sex is a practice focused on self exploration and self awareness.

Solo tantric sex can be thought of as a form of self-care and self-love, where the principles of Tantra can be applied to deepen the connection between one and one’s body.

5 Tips To Practice Tantric Sex, Solo-Dolo!

Feeling freaky enough to try solo tantric sex? Try these 5 helpful tips:

  1. Create your sacred space. Similar to partnered tantric sex, the setting plays a large role. You should set the mood in a comfortable area with minimal distractions.

  2. Begin by setting your intention. This could be anything from self-love to just wanting to explore your body. It is important that you stay focused on this intention and the present moment throughout the process.

  3. Focus on the journey and not the destination. Remember, this is a spiritual practice, so don’t try to rush through it. Enjoy each moment and allow yourself to feel all the sensations along the way.

  4. Explore breathwork and visualize the flow of energy. Try to employ different breathing techniques. Focus on your breath moving through your body, and the flow of energy that goes with it. Pay attention to how your energy shifts with each breath.

  5. Be patient with yourself. Meditation requires a lot of self compassion. This practice is deeply personal, and can spark up many emotions and deep-rooted feelings along the way.

Remember, this practice is personal to you. There’s no right or wrong way to go about it. Solo tantric sex is a journey of self-exploration and self-love, and requires openness and curiosity. As you practice, you may gain a deeper understanding of yourself.

Tantric Yoga

Tantric yoga can be another tantric practice for you to try. This physical interpretation of Tantra meditation is very similar to any other form of yoga. It incorporates:

  • A combination of different postures (Asanas)

  • Controlling your breath (Pranayama)

  • Visualization

  • Mantras/Chants

  • Rituals/Ceremonies

The end goal of tantric yoga can be a complete spiritual awakening, a personal transformation, or even just to enhance your mental and physical well-being.

Brief History of Tantric Practice

Tantra meditation can be traced back to roughly 500 CE, primarily in Buddhist and Hindu traditions. The traditions that practice Tantra feel that the energy encourages the spiritual transformation of life forces.

Tantra evolved by incorporating a wide range of spiritual philosophies. These included worshipping tantric deities, practicing yoga, and studying a broad spectrum of spiritual ideals. These philosophies were outlined in various books and ancient texts called Tantras, hence the name. Mostly, these books focused on energy work.

Over time, these studies spread and made their way west. In the modern sense, Tantra is mostly associated with sex and other acts of self empowerment. While the modern interpretation has changed paths from its original intent, Tantra’s overall mission of self-enlightenment remains the same.

A Meditation Rooted in Energy

Tantra is deeply rooted in the study of energy. Two of the main energy sources that are incorporated into Tantra meditation are Shakti energy and Kundalini energy.

Shakti is a divine feminine energy that is the cosmic energy force behind the universe itself. Shakti literally means “power” in Hindu. It is considered feminine because Shakti is behind the creation of the universe, and creation is associated with the feminine because women are responsible for birth.

Kundalini is an energy that is centered at the base of the spine. When all chakras are unblocked and the Kundalini is awakened, it travels up the spine through the Chakras leading to spiritual enlightenment.

Tantra’s goal is to balance these energies. The Shakti feminine energy should be perfectly balanced with with masculine energy (hence the sex) to exist in harmony.

When the Chakras are perfectly balanced, that is when spiritual awakening is made possible.

Although the practices of Tantra have evolved and changed over the years, it is still highly important that we remember the roots of the practice. It’s not all about sex. It is about the balancing of energy for self empowerment. No matter how you practice tantra meditation, it is important to set your intent and reap the benefits.
